The ferocious flea is found in all parts of San Diego County. They are present year round and are especially numerous in the Spring and Summer. There are several species and they are a pest to both dogs and cats.
Fleas can quickly get out of control in a home environment. Once entrenched it can take several weeks to eradicate them and several methods must be used.
Bathing your pet at the groomer is usually needed. At Furry Friends we use a botanical shampoo that destroys the outer skeleton of the insect. The pet soaks in the solution for 45 minutes. This shampoo is not a pesticide and presents no danger to the animal. Once rinsed, the pet is dried and gone over with the blow dryer and flea comb to remove dead fleas, any still living and flea eggs. Your pet can be in the shop for several hours, depending on the severity of the infestation. We pay particular attention to the ears and head and the anal area because fleas can hide in body cavities.
The home environment must be addressed while the pet is away. A thorough cleaning is needed to remove live insects and eggs. Wash all laundry where the pet sleeps and mop all hard floors with a little beach in the water. Vacuum all carpeted areas and dispose of the receptacle. In extreme cases it may be necessary to set off insect bombs or to hire an exterminator.
Ask your vet to recommend a flea medication. There are many types available and strength varies depending on the formula. Newer formulas that are prescribed by your vet are generally more effective than those bought over the counter.
Pets new to the home should immediately get a flea bath. Be especially careful when kittens come into the house as they often have fleas. Be very careful if you have a guest pet in your home because they can bring fleas in. Wipe down shoes frequently to remove any eggs that may be picked up from outside.
