Nails can be safely trimmed when the tip of the nail has grown out past the quick. The quick is the membrane that covers the blood supply to the nail.

Occasionally, there is a small amount of bleeding, particularly when it is difficult to see the quick on black nails. This bleeding is quickly stopped with septic powder.

The anal gland contains fluid that aids in elimination of feces. Sometimes that fluid builds up which causes irritation and itching. Emptying them relieves pressure and irritation.
